At this point I’ve lost count as to how many more Joker-related movies we’re getting. It doesn’t help matters that the TV show Gotham is introducing a full-on Joker in their universe, adding yet another Clown Prince of Crime to the mix. For the average moviegoer/TV-watcher, I can imagine things will get a bit confusing in the coming years. Is there another Joker-rekated movie with Jared Leto coming out, or is that my overactive imagination at work?
Whatever the case, the teaser trailer for director Todd Phillips’ Joker came out today and so far people have shown nothing but positivity for the footage. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a down-and-out failure of a stand-up comedian, the movie follows Fleck’s narrative as he descends deeper and deeper into madness. While Fleck doesn’t commit any criminal or macabre acts (at least from what the trailer shows us), it’s clear his lackadaisical approach to dealing with Gotham will take a dark turn. I mean obviously, the man becomes the Joker after all.
So there you have it. It’ll be interesting to see how the incorporate further DC mythology into the film, or maybe they won’t. After all, this is a Joker origin movie and not a Batman movie or a Batman vs. Joker movie. One way or the other, we’ll find out for sure when Joker arrives in theaters on October 4th, which just so happens to be right before New York Comic Con.
