Remember when the Power Rangers movie came out last year (2017)? I certainly do! In fact, I was among the first in line to see the thing. Okay, I’m lying, there wasn’t an actual line, but you get the point. The Power Rangers film was met with mixed criticism, but I enjoyed it. If you’ve seen the movie, then I ask you to remember back to that scene when the Rangers are in their zords charging into battle with the classic theme song playing in the background…I was grinning like an idiot the whole time!
Anyway, it appears as though Lionsgate and Hasbro are teaming up to deliver a sequel. You might have missed it, but Hasbro bought the Power Rangers franchise from Saban Properties a couple months back. At the time, Brian Goldner, the CEO and chairman of Hasbro, stated he felt Power Rangers wasn’t being used to its full potential and thought the franchise had loads of room to grow.
In staying true to his word, it was just announced by the International Licensing Industry Merchandiser’s Association (what a title) that Hasbro is indeed planning a Power Rangers sequel and is already talking to the movie studio about the subject as we speak. There’s no word on whether Dean Israelite, the director for the 2017 movie, will return, but its assumed the cast will reprise their rolls. Granted, there’s tons of paperwork to go through, but it’s good to see that Hasbro is actively seeking to return the Power Rangers to its former juggernaut status it enjoyed in the ‘90s.
