Ever since the announcement in May that Batwoman would be arriving in the CW’s Arroverse, fans of the lesbian socialite/butt-kicking superhero were ecstatic. Heck, if that wasn’t enough, it was then stated that she would be getting her own TV show too. Even those unfamiliar with Batwoman were happy, as her presence all but cemented the fact that Batman exists in the Arrowverse.
Today Batwoman’s casting was finally announced. The Australian actress/model Ruby Rose has been cast for the part and she’s scheduled to make her debut as the heroine in December amidst the annual Arroverse crossover.
The official tagline/logline/whatever you want to call it for the introduction of Batwoman is posted as follows, “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
This definitely presents a Batwoman/Kate Kane very similar to her comic book counterpart. The only thing I’ll express is that in her various comic series, while Batwoman does battle criminals and the like, she also takes on the weird and macabre. That’s to say she battles literal monsters like ghosts and tentacle monsters, the creatures that don’t fall on Batman’s radar. Here’s hoping we’ll see Batowman in space alongside Etrigan, Clayface, and Ragman, battling a horde of monsters on board a satellite. For real, it happened! Go read Batwoman #35!
