By now, Thor’s hammer Mjolnir is nearly as well known as the God of Thunder himself. The two are something of a packaged deal; you can’t have one without the other. Over the years, audiences have grown rather attached to Mjolnir and the sheer power it’s capable of unleashing at a moment’s notice. Yet back in the early days of Marvel Studios, the question was how to best represent the magical weapon on screen.
As with any iconic costume or prop, a great deal of painstaking preliminary effort goes into ensuring the correct design is selected. Charlie Wen, a Marvel Studios artist, was tasked with that very job. It was his responsibility to comb through a myriad of possibilities for Thor’s hammer. As you can see, the looks range from the familiar to the bizarre. That said, they are all super cool and each hammer definitely sports its own personality.
