Over the past 5 weeks or so, comic book superstar Brian Michael Bendis has been penning Superman’s adventures. Already having introduced new villains and shaken up much of Superman’s landscape that many, including the Man of Steel, came to take for granted, the sky is the limit with Bendis and where he goes from here. Yet Bendis’ initial run on Superman is only the beginning.
The talented author is going to be taking on both Action Comics and Superman and DC Comics has decided to feature a 30-second television spot to highlight the fact. Featuring Superman-related artwork by creators like Jason Fabok, Kevin Maguire, and multiple others, the commercial encourages fans, both new and old, to check out Superman #1 and Action Comics #1001.
Making TV commercials to promote comic books isn’t exactly a common thing for publishers but it might be the shot of adrenaline the industry needs. The trailer boldly declares that, “It’s a new era for the Man of Steel!”; it might very well be a new era for comic books too.
As a Superman fan myself, I didn’t necessarily need the encouragement, but it’s nice to know that millions of folks might decide to pick up an issue. Superman #1 comes out on July 11th and Action Comics #1001 arrives in comic shops on July 25th.
